Men,women and work
Gender pay gap do exists and it is the penalty women pay for child bearing. HR policies does not allow you to ask other employee's salary. I have asked few of my friend's salary, after I quit working. Everytime, I chat with my friends, they will speak about their current company and earnings. I have observed that my male friend's salary is higher than female friends. We all have started our career with the same salary, but after many job shifting , the salary of male counter parts were much higher. Even HR interview round, lasted long for women, questions ranging from when are you planning to get married, will you have child immediately etc. Child care is cited as the main reason for it. Men are not entitled to take care of children. Paternity leave is given for just 7 to 10 days. Even seven days leave is mocked by bosses .In my marketing department ,an associate level employee was asked, " what are you going to do for delivery? ". The marketing manager was murmuring that these kind of leaves are unnecessary and this is preventing associates from achieving target. Patriarchs argue that women choose family over job. I would say women are forced to choose child care. "Why men's paternity leave iejust for 7 days? , Where is affordable child care ? " are few questions women have been asking for generations. Government, policy makers and employers must work towards affordable childcare. Anti-feminists argue that women fight for equality and gender pay gap only in white collar jobs. This is a myth. Women of all sections of society are fighting for equality. An educated woman can write and speak about gender disparity and pay gap in public domain; surveys are done based on organised sector . Gender pay gap exists in construction industry. A female mason is paid less than their male counter parts. It Is said that the job difficulty exists, but women never refused to undergo the hardship in work. I once spoke with a construction worker, she said that low income group women are not given any skill training. Any government scheme or NGO would just give them a basic tailoring lessons. They are given a basic tailoring machine and each and every home will have a tailor. The construction worker said that she have said an NGO worker of their situation. The poor women have pleaded NGO worker to give them some job training, like brick laying,Carpentry, electrical work etc. Those poor women have said that it would be useful for their women . The NGO workers have said them that those kind of women not safe for women. She said that they would consider some embroidery, Aari, Tanjore painting as few skilled based course for underprivileged women. She said that government and NGO groups think that these women are ungrateful for their efforts. As we don't show any interest on their sewing class they think that we don't have any intentions of improving our lives. Her grief stricken words still poke my Heart. She said " what kind of safety do they think that we have? We have to walk over a small wooden plank above 50 ft height and we are sexually abused by supervisors". She also added that she chains her kids with trees or gates to prevent from child trafficking. Even a toddler's legs are tied with rope to their hammocks. She said that they all believe if they start doing skill based jobs they may escape from sexual harassment and they can provide better lives for their children.
